Cambodians deported from US.

from Phnom Penh, David O’Shea reports for 'Dateline on SBS' Tv, on people who have experienced a new form of punishment meted out by the US justice system.

Lawbreaking immigrants are being deported to the countries of their origin for crimes committed in the US.

AND IT’S ABOUT TIME. BUT WHY I ASK…ARE ONLY CAMBODIANS BEING DEPORTED, WHEN SO MANY ARE FROM AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST.
THERE WAS A FEW CASES HERE AWHILE AGO, THAT A PERSON FOUGHT AGINST BEING DEPORTED BECAUSE HE COULD NOT SPEAK HIS LANGUAGE, KNEW NO FAMILY, OR KNEW THE CULTURE OF HIS ORIGINS…HE WAS DEPORTED BUT THEN THE DO-GOODERS WENT AND FILMED HIM WITH NOWHERE TO LIVE, NO WORK PROSPECTS ETC. HE WAS PERMITTED BACK INTO AUSTRALIA. THERE WAS ANOTHER CASE OF A YOUNG SCHOOLBOY, CLEAN LIVING, NO PROBLEMS WITH THE LAW, HIS SCHOOLMATES AND SCHOOL RALLIED AROUND HIM AND RAISED MONEY…ALL BECAUSE HIS FATHER’S VISA PAPERS WERE OUT OF DATE, SO THE SON WAS ALSO BEING DEPORTED…THIS BOY WAS FROM SOME ASIAN COUNTRY.
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE ANYONE WHO COMMITS CRIMES OR ACTS OF TREASON, DEPORTED TO THEIR PLACE OF ORIGIN…NO APPEAL PROCESS, NO TIME IN JAIL HERE…JUST STRAIGH ON A PLANE AND OUT OF HERE.

David discovers that many of them had emigrated to the US from Cambodia as young children to escape the ‘Killing Fields’ but they now have no connection to the country of their birth. Caught between two cultures, they’re still calling America home, but can now never return.
